About the Founding Edition — PSPC2007

The 1st Poverty and Social Protection Conference (PSPC2007), held from 9th to 11th November 2007 in Bangkok, Thailand at the First Hotel, marked the beginning of what would become a long-running international conference series on poverty, inequality and social protection.

As the inaugural edition, PSPC2007 brought together a small but diverse group of researchers, practitioners, NGO representatives and policymakers who shared a commitment to addressing the structural causes of poverty and strengthening social protection systems. Organized at a time when digital archiving was not yet standard practice, this first conference laid the foundation for many of the principles that continue to define the Poverty and Social Protection Conference today:

  • Focus on poverty and social protection as interconnected dimensions of human development
  • Emphasis on real-world case studies, lived experiences and practical policy solutions
  • Cross-sector collaboration between academia, civil society, government and international organizations
  • Space for voices from the field and marginalized communities to be heard
  • Supportive, inclusive and non-hierarchical environment that values dialogue over status

PSPC2007 set the tone for a conference series that would, in the years that followed, provide a platform for global conversations on poverty reduction, social protection, and inclusive development.
